What is Arbutin?

 

Arbutin is a hydroquinone glycoside extracted from plants of the genus Arctostaphylos. Arbutin is beneficial in inhibiting tyrosinase, preventing melanin formation, which makes it effective in whitening. Three common types of arbutin are found in the market: α-Arbutin, β-Arbutin, and D-Arbutin. β-Arbutin vs. D-Arbutin vs. α-Arbutin

 

β-Arbutin is manufactured using various methods, including chemical synthesis, plant cell cultivation, enzyme conversion, and plant extraction. The structural stability of β-Arbutin is relatively low, making it susceptible to decomposition and conversion into hydroquinone (quinone) under UV rays and high temperatures. Unsuitable for morning use.

 

D-Arbutin is obtained by removing the glucose hydroxyl group from β-Arbutin. It also possesses the function of inhibiting tyrosinase. As it lacks the β-glucose base, it is less susceptible to hydrolysis by β-glucosidase into hydroquinone. Due to the lack of the hydroxyl group, it is more lipophilic. Compared to the other two types of arbutin, it is more easily absorbed by the skin. The stability of D-Arbutin is also relatively low. Currently, most D-Arbutin are chemically synthesized and less commonly used in skincare products.

 

α-Arbutin is obtained through microbial enzyme sugar conversion. It is light- and heat- resistant, making it suitable for both morning and evening use. α-Arbutin is more stable and effective than β-Arbutin, it is non-toxic to cells even under high temperatures. α-Arbutin effectively inhibits tyrosinase, resulting in even skin tone, reduced pigmentation, and diminished freckles, age spots, acne scars, blemishes, redness, etc. It also possesses preservative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Why test the cytotoxicity of whitening products? What grade of arbutin does BE.ST use?

 

The focus is on the once-popular traditional whitening product component: hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is deemed one of the most effective melanin-inhibiting substances in the market. However, in 1982, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) evaluation revealed evidence of long-term carcinogenic and genotoxic effects of hydroquinone. In 2006, the US FDA revoked its previous approval of hydroquinone and proposed to ban all over-the-counter (OTC) formulations, signifying its prohibition as a cosmetic ingredient. Since hydroquinone couldn't be used as a skin whitener after the ban, other substances have been used as substitutes. Arbutin's chemical structure, being similar to hydroquinone, has been considered a safe and effective substitute, hence being used as the sought-after skin whitening ingredient.
